Battle royale games are still all the rage right now and Ubisoft is tossing its hat in the ring with a title based on the Ghost Recon franchise. It’s officially called Ghost Recon Frontline. This isn’t Ubisoft’s first battle royale game. However, it will be the first to use the name Ghost Recon.
The studio already has Hyper Scape, a battle royale game released last year. But despite its gorgeous graphics and fast-paced gameplay, it failed to reach the popularity levels of games from other major studios. Blockbuster titles like Fortnite, Warzone, Apex Legends, and PUBG still dominate the genre.
And it could be Ubisoft’s first big hit in the genre.
With Ghost Recon Frontline, Ubisoft has the ability to capture Battle Royale fans and Ghost Recon fans. The challenge for Ubisoft here is to release a game like this without losing much or nothing of the gameplay and grainy themes that make the Ghost Recon and Tom Clancy franchises so popular.
The studio says Frontline is not your typical “battle royale”. Forgo standard features like the shrinking map and being the last team standing. Instead, players will have to scour the map and complete a series of different tasks to collect information.
Ghost Recon Frontline will allow over 100 players in teams of three to compete on the battlefield.
Gathering enough information allows the management team to request an extraction in an attempt to escape the island and secure victory.
Of course, things are never that simple. As other players are alerted to the pull call and may try to stop the leading team.
Of course, Ghost Recon Frontline will be free. Like all or most of the other battle royale games that came before it. Ubisoft plans to monetize the game with in-app purchases. Probably for mostly visual stuff like skins and the like for guns and characters. Ubisoft has yet to set a release date. When it launches, it will land on virtually all platforms. Including PC via Ubisoft Connect, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Stadia and Luna.
