The Navy and Air Force will kick off the 2021 college football season on CBS when they meet in the first leg of the battle for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy on Saturday afternoon in Annapolis, Maryland.

The 2021 season marks the 50th year of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy Competition, the annual battle between the military, navy and air force for supremacy among service academies. All three round-robin games this year will air on CBS, starting with Saturday’s game and ending with Army-Navy on December 11.

The game staged for the 20th anniversary of September 11th adds another layer to its historic rivalry. Both teams will wear alternate uniforms for the occasion, there will be a 9/11 tribute at halftime and many other activities added to the game experience.

On the pitch we have what should be a big showdown between two programs that have alternated wins in this series every year since 2013. The Air Force won hands down in last year’s 40-7 game, but this year, the match returns to Annapolis where Navy leads. 12-8 in the series as a true home team.

Marine vs. Air Force: Need to know

Navy defense looking for a rebound: The contenders have one of the nation’s best linebackers at Diego Fagot, and the senior enters that showdown after six tackles and a loss tackle in the season opener loss to Marshall. But this defense, which is the team’s strongest unit, needs a rebound after allowing for 464 yards at 7.4 yards per game in the 42-point loss to the Thundering Herd. The Air Force won’t be able to pose the kind of transient threat it faced last week, but it is still of the utmost importance that the Navy limit explosive games as it destroys what can be a significant effort of the defense during a journey.

Haaziq Daniels leads the Air Force offensive attack: The junior quarterback made three touchdowns and played well as a scorer in an attack that totaled 370 rushing yards in his Week 1 win over Lafayette. Daniels scored his first career touchdown in last year’s win over the Navy and he’s looking to renew that success, teaming up fullback Brad Roberts in the backfield and wide receiver Micah Davis as the threat of the big game in the ground game.

The Air Force seeks to break the drought of the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy: The Falcons had the advantage in this round robin rivalry with the Army and Navy early in the last decade, winning the trophy four times between 2010-16, and have the most trophy wins in the World. Commander-in-Chief (20) in the series. But the Air Force hasn’t been able to break through with victories against the Army and Navy since 2016 and this spot, favored by nearly a touchdown against the Midshipmen, could be the start of another race. which breaks this drought.

Navy vs Air Force prediction, choice

Featured Game | Midshipmen vs. Air Force Falcons

First of all, the game for this game and all Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy games is the basement. The under has been hitting at an astonishing rate since 2005 and while the numbers continue to drop, the style of play contributes to fewer possessions and fewer points. So, predicting a tight, low-scoring game, I have to support the home underdog who hasn’t lost at Annapolis in a decade. Prediction: Marine (+6)
