Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Pat Cummins launched a stunning assault with the bat against the Mumbai Indians, turning a close chase into an easy win in the span of a single. Cummins hit Daniel Sams for 35 points in the 16th of the game to lead his side to victory on Wednesday, hitting the fastest half-century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Cummins went at bat with KKR needing 61 runs from 41 deliveries with five wickets in hand. It’s not the easiest of prospects and the game appeared to be heading for a tense end, but the Australian Test captain had other plans.

Speaking to Star Sports broadcasters after the game, former India head coach Ravi Shastri joked that Cummins had “spoiled a very good game of cricket.

“It’s like someone walking past him saying, ‘Well done Pat. Thanks for ruining a really good game of cricket.’ He ruined a very good game of cricket,” Shastri said.

“It was unreal. 35 runs in an over. You have to start thinking when did you see a game like this where the other team had the upper hand to some degree and then it goes to maybe 60- 40 for Mumbai Indians. Come on next it’s over. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a match like this and I’ve seen a lot of cricket,” he said of of KKR’s pursuit.

Noting that Venkatesh Iyer, who anchored KKR’s pursuit with an unbeaten 50 of 41, mentioned the ground was still tough to beat, Shastri said: “He spoke beautifully, Venkatesh Iyer. What he said was absolutely true. It was difficult for everyone else.”

“Look at that strike. He went out on a mission. He made 49 runs in his four overs, so he says I’m going to get those runs and more to finish this game. And my word, he hit it all around the And there are hardly any misses in this inning,” he continued of Cummins’ hit innings.

Cummins hit his half-century on 14 deliveries, then hit the next ball for the winning six to finish on 56* of 15.

He also took two wickets, including that of in-form Ishan Kishan, as MI was limited to 161/4.
