Forspoken 4-minute gameplay trailer showcases combat and exploration

Square Enix and developer Luminous Productions have released four minutes of Forspoken gameplay that shows off UI, combat, exploration and more.

In collaboration with IGN, publisher Square Enix and developer Luminous Productions shared a four-minute gameplay trailer for Speak, which offers deeper insight into combat, exploration, and UI. First unveiled at the PS5 reveal event as Athia Project, Speak is the first game from Luminous Productions – a team formed during production on Final Fantasy XV.

The publisher has officially confirmed the Speak title earlier this year during its Square Enix Presents broadcast, a digital event that also teased the game’s 2022 release window. In the many months since, more details have emerged about the action-RPG, including including its May 2022 due date – Square Enix revealed this latest information during The Game Awards 2021 late last week. The adventure itself will allow players to assume the role of Freya Holland, a young woman transported from New York to the fantastic land of Athia. As beauty and magic flow easily across the open world, Freya will find threats to the sprawling landscape as well. All of this and more has been deepened through recently released gameplay footage.

Square Enix and Luminous Productions have partnered with IGN to showcase four minutes of never-before-seen gameplay footage from Speak running on PS5. The first minute or so shows Freya navigating through a fortified city, before racing towards her new destination at high speed. Viewers also get a glimpse of the open world map and UI. Notably, the User Interface section features the skill system, gear customization, and optional nail polish designs for Freya’s fingernails. Forspoken’s the combat mechanics also take center stage for a time, as Freya uses magical abilities to fend off a small horde of enemies. Check it all out in the video below:

The combat section of the gameplay trailer shows Freya firing various water-based projectiles and attacks. She also lays traps mid-battle, showing that players will have the ability to mix and match gameplay to their preferred style. Luckily, these kinds of changes seem to happen on the fly, so users won’t have to worry about constantly navigating in and out of menus when things get a little intense.

One thing that might grind some players’ gears is how often Freya speaks during fights. Quipping like that is nothing new, of course. Naughty Dog has set the bar for this kind of in-game commentary with Nathan Drake in Unexplored. Guerrilla took a page from the same book in Horizon: Zero Dawn with Aloy’s jokes. And many would say Deacon St. John in Days gone talked a little too much. Hoping that Luminous Productions is able to find the right balance.
