Dune: Spice Wars is an RTS-4X hybrid game from Northgard developers

Launch the ornithopter, because it’s time to head to Arrakis. The developers of the excellent Viking RTS Northgard have announced that their next project is Dune: Spice Wars, an RTS-4X hybrid game where you will lead one of the many great houses vying for control of the source of the precious mixture of spices, a mind-altering narcotic that enables interstellar travel.

Dune: Spice Wars will be available in Early Access this year, developer Shiro Games has said. The studio describes it as a “real-time strategy game with 4X elements”, and it’s based on Frank Herbert’s classic Dune novels (rather than any of his many adaptations). Although the action takes place in “real time”, the scale is much larger than most other RTS games, and in addition to military maneuvers, you’ll deal with politics, spies, economic development, and warfare. ‘exploration.

Although there are some similarities between Dune: Spice Wars and Northgard, Shiro Games says this is a new game from the ground up. One thing that’s retained, however, is a brighter, somewhat “cartoony” art style – and Shiro Games wisely explains that this is intended to make it enjoyable to stare at a desert landscape for a few hours at a time.

During Early Access, Shiro says he plans to add a single-player and multiplayer story campaign, as well as additional Dune houses – Atreides, Harkonnen and two other factions will be present for the Early Access launch , but more will be added during the early access period.

You’ll be able to purchase Dune: Spice Wars on Steam when Early Access begins later this year.
